This gold coin with the iconic images of Lady Liberty carrying the torch of freedom and the proud bald eagle is instantly recognizable. The Gold Eagle was first minted in 1986. Initially dated with Roman numerals, their year of mintage was not designated in Arabic numerals until 1992.
Like all bullion coins, Gold Eagles are legal tender in the USA, at least in theory. However, the gold value exceeds the stated face value many times over.
