1 oz American Buffalo gold coin

The design of the American Buffalo draws on that of a 1913 five-cent coin called a nickel. However, today's bullion coin is made of pure gold rather than nickel. The buffalo shown on the reverse is said to have been an attraction at the Central Park Zoo. Pictured on the obverse is a Native American chief.

There is some uncertainty about the identity of the individual this iconic image was modelled on. What is certain is that the American Buffalo is one of the world's most popular bullion coins.
